I spoke to LBC’s Tom Swarbrick about Shabana Mahmood’s first day as Home Secretary. Unsurprisingly, migration was front and centre — and she already claimed to have the solution. What struck me during the interview was how biased the framing of the story felt, with questions steeped in today’s anti-immigration zeitgeist. A quick look at Wikipedia explained a lot: Swarbrick was head of broadcast at Downing Street (2016–18) and a former adviser to Theresa May.
Later today I joined BBC Radio 5 Live (21’49”) for a less antagonistic exchange, where we discussed how this endless churning out of ‘solutions’ for migration signals desperation and confusion more than leadership.
